meet Cody Gene: Record Producer
the big picture
What made you want to pursue a career in music?
I have always enjoyed the idea of creative exploration. I consider myself pursuing a career in creative lifestyle, not just music. it includes graphics design, philosophy, writing, research as well as songwriting and music production. to me these are all connected.
Can you share some highlights of your music career if any?
I'm from a small town. i've played in bands, recorded local artists, stage-managed local festivals. lately, I've been seeking to get outside my local sphere and connect with others online.
How would you describe your style and sound as an artist?
production: Analog techniques using digital tools, good performance of good songs and working with session-players where they're needed.
songwriting: it's symbolic, maybe cryptic. I like the idea of saying it without saying it.
In what ways do you believe your music resonates with your audience?
Music is a reflection of the soul of the artist. If someone resonates with my music, it's because we have something in common.
How do you approach collaboration with other musicians or producers?
I help independent artists navigate the industry by providing support. I help artists solve problems to save time & energy. I seek to unpack what makes an artist unique and highlight it. often this work involves identifying and carefully navigating mental-resistances and limiting beliefs as much as it does working with the music.
Can you share any experiences working with a team in the past? or are you truly independent?
I've worked with teams, but less in music. I prefer 1-on-1 with indies who want to remain indie to be honest. I co-founded a Silviculture coop, and i currently sit on a board of a local community development incubator.
Have you had any significant achievements or accolades in your career that you're particularly proud of?
nothing notable. i prefer to remain behind the scenes - not seeking accolades, instead opting to give others the spotlight. after a several year hiatus from music, i'm rebuilding from the ground-up. building network and referrals of which i've gained several in a few short months.
What motivates you to continue pushing yourself as an artist?
Consistent effort is the driver of achievement. Artistic Vision sets the direction. A Goal sets the marker. After that, it's simply a matter of walking-the-path.
Have you faced any challenges in your career, and how did you overcome them?
many, answer depends on context. Creative problem-solving, brute force through hard-work, or simply having patience and giving challenges enough time to develop. what does the situation call for?
How do you engage with your fan base on social media, and what role does it play in your overall strategy?
I try to be as natural as possible, to express my self truly. I try NOT to put on a facade. S.M. plays a large role in my strategy as my local scene is very small with limited noteworthy contacts, so it's important for me to branch out online. Social media to me is about reaching new people and earning their trust. it's marketing 101
What is the next single you want to release?
Currently collaborating with local EDM/House DJ Stevie James. I want his track to be a banger for a 4.20 event in downtown Vancouver.
Are you interested in a distribution deal or Royalty Split?
Not especially. I prefer freelance work. in some cases, i will entertain the idea of a co-write, but it depends on a project and it has to be the right project.
